Windows PowerShell

Windows PowerShell

Paradigm	Multi-paradigm: Imperative, pipeline, object-oriented, functional and reflective
Appeared in	2006
Designed by	Jeffrey Snover, Bruce Payette, James Truher (et al.)
Developer	Microsoft Corporation
Typing discipline	Strong, safe, implicit and dynamic
Influenced by	C#, DCL, ksh, Perl, Ruby/LISP, CL, SQL, Command Prompt,[citation needed] Tcl[1]
Platform	.NET Framework
OS	Microsoft Windows
Windows PowerShell is Microsoft’s task automation framework, consisting of a command-line shell and associated scripting language built on top of, and integrated with, the .NET Framework. PowerShell provides full access to COM and WMI, enabling administrators to perform administrative tasks on both local and remote Windows systems.
In PowerShell, administrative tasks are generally performed by cmdlets (pronounced command-lets), specialized .NET classes implementing a particular operation. Sets of cmdlets may be combined together in scripts, executables (which are standalone applications), or by instantiating regular .NET classes (or WMI/COM Objects).[2][3] These work by accessing data in different data stores, like the filesystem or registry, which are made available to the PowerShell runtime via Windows PowerShell providers.
Windows PowerShell also provides a hosting mechanism with which the Windows PowerShell runtime can be embedded inside other applications. These applications then leverage Windows PowerShell functionality to implement certain operations, including those exposed via the graphical interface. This capability has been utilized by Microsoft Exchange Server 2007[2][4] to expose its management functionality as PowerShell cmdlets and providers and implement the graphical management tools as PowerShell hosts which invoke the necessary cmdlets. Other Microsoft applications including Microsoft SQL Server 2008[5] also expose their management interface via PowerShell cmdlets. With PowerShell, graphical interface-based management applications on Windows are layered on top of Windows PowerShell. In the future all Microsoft applications running on the Windows platform are to be PowerShell aware.[citation needed]

Pie Tin
Early on I was a fan of science fiction movies. Each Saturday afternoon, after the early morning cartoons, breakfast, post breakfast cartoons and the Sugar Corn Pops sugar high crash, when all hope for any excitement was almost lost and especially on days when it rained…something magical happened. The local ultra-high frequency television station would play horror and science fiction movies from noon – four. From noon to two was “Creature Feature”, showcasing all the old Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. Then at 2:00…Far Out Flicks. At the beginning of the the show they would display a space landscape and two silver pie tins on top of each other made to look like a flying saucer. Next it would begin to lift up, (from a string), and there was a phase shifting sound that resembled, “booo-BEEP-booo-BEEP-booo-BEEP”, and then the feature would begin. The earliest movie I can recall seeing on this program was a the 1957 black and white little known, “The Monolith Monsters”. The premise involves a meteor crash and the resulting fragments. Once exposed to water, the fragments grow to skyscraper-sized monoliths until they would topple and shatter into thousands of pieces and repeat the process. Squashing nearby humans or turning them into statues along with vast property damage, the town rushes to find a way to get rid of this problem.

YouTube Search Results for The Monolithic Monsters

Gone but not forgotten
I never saw or heard of this movie again since I first saw it around 1976. Over twenty years later a co-worker showed me a computer video game called Command and Conquer that had growing rocks in it. The item in the game was called Tiberium, as it turns out this movie was the inspiration for that particular component of the game. Finally last night, I was re-watching another more recent classic, “They Live”. During one of the scenes where the people at the homeless shelter are watching television before the raid, I caught a 2 or 3 second glimpse of my long lost movie. Seeing that on the screen I instantly recognized such a time-locked vivid image from the past, it was a direct portal back to that day. It’s like a direct link back to the essence of everything about the place that existed, something that could not be uncovered by physically returning to the actual location. So having experienced that and then searching for the title of the film, finding the actual film posted on YouTube in ten minute increments, I now wonder, what was the intent? What did John Carpenter decide to feature the clip as the movie all the homeless people were watching? Obscurity.
